Aleesha

Camai,

Congratulations to the class of 2024! On behalf of Bristol Bay Foundation (BBF), we send our best wishes and congratulations to Bristol Bay graduates and express our gratitude to the many caring adults, teachers, families, and communities that contributed to the success of these students.

In the words of our former chair, the late Marie Paul, “Thank you for furthering your education. We needed you yesterday, today and tomorrow. Do not forget who you are and where you came from. We need you. Do your best every day.”

We are also excited to announce the recipients of the 2024-2025 Higher Education Scholarship awards and most recent Career Focused Vocational Scholarship recipients. We wish them a productive and fun summer and share their excitement to continue their academic journeys.

Summer is the season of building support for our programs. We are continuing with our Neqa in Bristol Bay event, which will be held at Kulik Lodge on June 15-22. It will be an exciting week to benefit BBF’s cultural heritage and scholarship programs. You can also support our activities by supporting the event virtually, and, of course, be on the lookout for information regarding the annual fall raffle.

Do you have ideas for BBF? You can always reach us at bbf@bristolbayfoundation.org or (907) 265-7810.

Aleesha Towns-Bain
Bristol Bay Foundation Executive Director

Bristol Bay Teaching and Learning Collaborative

BBF is partnering with communities to host three culture camps in region this summer! Camps will be held in Perryville (May 27-29), Manokotak (July 22-26), and Pedro Bay (August 5-9). You are eligible to attend if you are a community resident. All ages welcome (youth to Elders). If you are unsure whether you qualify OR if you would like more information to participate or get involved, please fill out our interest form by clicking here.

Our partners at the University of Alaska Anchorage and at the Alaska Humanities Forum are recruiting Bristol Bay educators and administrators to participate in the Creating Cultural Competence (C3) program (for teachers five years or less in their career located in Bristol Bay) and a hybrid, two-year Master of Education program. For more information, please contact Emily Brockman at emily@bristolbayfoundation.org or (907) 265-7810.

Congratulations to our partners at the Bristol Bay Regional Career and Technical Education program for receiving a 2024 Magna Award from the National Association of School Boards for innovation! Read more by clicking here.

Opportunities for Students

In our commitment to better serve our community, we are opening another opportunity for higher education funding! BBF has introduced a second Higher Education Scholarship deadline to coincide with the third Career-Focused Vocational Education (CFVE) deadline of the year. The application period will open on Monday, September 2, 2024, and close on Friday, December 6, 2024.

Higher Education Scholarship Program

The Higher Education scholarship program, designed to support BBNC shareholders and descendants pursuing two-year, four-year, and graduate degrees, will now have TWO application deadlines each year! The next deadline is Friday, December 6, 2024.

CFVE Program

The CFVE program, aimed at providing in-depth training for specific career-focused and long-term employment goals (professional piloting, maritime, cosmetology licensing, and industry trades) will continue to have three deadlines each year. The next deadline is Friday, July 26, 2024.

Both programs are open to serve direct lineal descendants. There are no blood quantum or residency requirements. For more information and to apply online, visit myBBNC.net. Paper applications are available upon request. If you have any questions, contact the BBF office at bbf@bristolbayfoundation.org or (907) 265-7810.

Bristol Bay Indigenous Language Summit

It was inspiring to witness the dedication of individuals from across Bristol Bay at the 2024 Bristol Bay Indigenous Language Summit. Our collective commitment to advancing Indigenous languages and nurturing cultural understanding was evident throughout the event.

The summit provided a platform for a diverse voices in language work. Esteemed Elders Evelyn Yanez and Mark Hiratsuka shared their wisdom, enriching the discussions and leaders such as Ethan Petticrew from Alaska Native Head Start and Dr. April Laktonen Counceller, CEO of the Alutiiq Museum, among others, offered invaluable insights and innovative approaches to language revitalization, paving the way for meaningful progress.

This event was made possible by many, and we extend heartfelt gratitude to the Indigenous Language Strategic Plan and Summit Steering Committee Members for their guidance. Special thanks to Raven’s Group for their exceptional facilitation and planning expertise. We also deeply appreciate the generous support of our donors: Bristol Bay Economic Development Corporation, Bristol Bay Native Corporation, Oceanside Corporation, Paug-Vik Incorporated Limited, and the United Tribes of Bristol Bay.

Reflecting on the summit’s impact, let us carry forward the spirit of unity and collaboration. Together, we will champion the revitalization of Indigenous languages and cultures, ensuring a vibrant and inclusive future for generations to come.

Congratulations 2023-2024 Graduates

BBF extends its congratulations and best wishes to these 2023-2024 graduates of all levels! Has one of your loved ones recently graduated? Send us an email at bbf@bristolbayfoundation.org and we’ll be sure to recognize them on our social media pages.
